has already dumped freezing rain in states including north carolina and tennessee. it's been dropping snow in ohio, pennsylvania right during the evening commute. along with a light dusting here in new york city over the last couple of hours. it's just the latest winter insult coming during a streesk frigid weather. animation shows how the cold air descended on the country last weekend as a drop in the jet stream sent temperatures plummeting across much of the country. all of those areas in bluish thing there is where it is below freezing. you can see the cycle as two separate cold fronts moved across the area. freezing conditions have been causing problems in firefighters. this lawrntion, massachusetts, first responders found themselves encased in ice as they fought a fire in a three story building last night. the deputy fire chief says the frozen fire hydrants and fire lines are making things tough. in chicago folks finally saw more than an inch of snow for the first time in 335 days. chicago hasn't seen a streak close to that in more than 70 years. , during this artic cold snap, fe

like memphis, tennessee. several inches of snow also piling up in some parts of the northeast today. but folks there might be used to that sort of weather in january. it is a different story down in dixie. chief meteorologist rick reichmuth with the first alert forecast for them and all of us in our extreme weather center. rick, hello. >> very cold down across parts of the the south. so much of the eastern part of the country has been so warm for the last few days. this is the last little pocket of that warmth from around atlanta down through florida. temps still looking good. back behind this very very cold air. that's where we have been seeing these storms stalled frontal boundary and impulses move along it freezing rain yesterday. that freezing rain down across the south brought snow today in across parts of the northeast. and we're still going to deal with the tail end of this across parts of the northeast. but, unfortunately, still some more mess here of rain and a little bit of snow for the overnight hours from this storm, shep? bill? >> bill: you are still wick to me. >> righ
